on a recent obsession with the nba

i’ve always had a love for the nba. sometimes it has been more passive than active, but i feel like over the past two years i’ve been much more than just a casual fan. will i blame my previous decreased attention on the fact that the spurs were booty cheeks for a while? absolutely. don’t call me a bandwagoner, because i’ve always been a spurs fan, and i was back on the hype train in 2022 before they drafted victor wembanyama. i was watching the draft when they picked jeremy sochan, malaki branham, and blake wesley while at a literal concert. i’ve been here and i’ve been around loving the spurs! since living in houston, i’ve made it to san antonio for at least one game each non covid year because i ain’t new to this, i’m true to this.

now, sure, after they drafted victor wembanyama that love escalated a bit, but it helps to have something to cheer for! and now the last two years i’ve probably watched at least half of the spurs games and that’s a conservative assessment, especially if one were to ask autumn. i’ve even prioritized watching some of their games over reading good books at times, so you know it’s serious.

however, this past year i scaled up my attention even more. i graduated from perusing the sportsnation blogs to being a regulation reader on all kinds of nba related subreddits. seeing information from all across the league has really helped me to invest time in learning about all the teams. i’ve been consuming nba media in new to me ways in the form of podcasts, youtube videos, and other blogs in a way that i never actively sought out before.

and all of this exposure to the nba has really increased my love for the league and i have been really tapped into everything that is happening. it’s been really fun to not just love the spurs, but the league in total. i never saw myself as someone who would dive deep into draft picks or follow closely all the series all the way through the playoffs, yet here i am. i love basketball, but saw myself as more of a one team lifer. however, it’s been so fun to see the league in a wider way and just involve myself with so much of the goings-ons.

going into the upcoming year, i’m super pumped for what the spurs can be. i love the addition of dylan harper and i have a true favorite player in stephon castle. obviously wemby is gonna wemby and jeremy sochan’s attitude really makes me happy. i love the bench, the role players, the everything that the spurs are and represent. i’m not as high on the carter bryant pick as others are, but i hope he can be exactly what many experts are saying he can be. it’s going to be another long, sad summer without nba basketball, but increasing my love for the sport has been such a true joy this year, and i’m anticipating growing it even further in the next year.

hopefully the spurs make moves to tool themselves for a deep playoff run next year, but i’ll be glued to the tv even if they aren’t.

do great; be happy
